Improving Facilities and Resources

Libraries

Lack of access to books and other educational materials is a major impediment to improving education in rural communities. The YP’s rural library project provides books and computers for schools in our partner communities, as well as the buildings necessary to house these materials. The libraries have been enthusiastically embraced by our partner communities, with many individuals volunteering to participate in the project.

The YP has assisted in the construction and stocking of libraries in the communities of Yonso and Apaah, providing improved access to educational materials for hundreds of students. We also hope to provide an additional facility for the Akrofoso community in the coming year.

Please view our photo gallery of the Apaah library, which opened in 2010! These photos were taken as the first books were arriving at the building.

School Renovations

School facilities in Ghana are often in extremely poor condition, with crumbling roofs, walls, and floors. Old or poorly constructed buildings are a distraction for both teachers and students and are sometimes structurally unsound. The Yonso Project is working with school officials in all four of our partner communities — Yonso, Kyekyewere, Apaah, and Akrofonso — to improve school facilities. In the coming year, the YP plans to assist in the renovation of at least four school buildings (depending  on financial constraints). The pictures below show some of the buildings that have been renovated in 2009.
